2022 Virtual Race Roundup: January - May

While I'm back to participating in in-person events (yay, races are back!), I've still got some virtual runs on my calendar.

These virtual runs and walks are mostly completed alone, in my neighborhood or on local trails, so they unfortunately aren't particularly memorable. It doesn't make sense to write up individual reports, but I still want to make some note them, especially to shout out the charities involved. Here are my brief recaps from virtual events completed in the first half of 2022.

1 The Ryan Walsworth Spear-It 5K

I also ran this virtually in 2020. I think the theme is so fun (asparagus -- though it is seriously meant to memorialize a member of the local farming community) and I loved the 2020 shirt so much, so I was in again. I missed the actual race window around the in-person race day of June 12, 2021, and ended up completing this the following January. This race will take place in person again in 2022, with no virtual option.

  • Completed: January 3, 2022 in my neighborhood
  • Cost: $25
  • Swag: Finisher medal and t-shirt
  • Time: 47:38

2 Central Florida 5Keg

This race took place in person on the evening of April 8, 2022. I registered for the race but unfortunately I was unable to attend. I reached out to the race director to see if I could complete the race on my own, virtually. The RD kindly obliged so I was able to complete this virtually on my own at a later date.

  • Completed: May 4, 2022 on the Spring-to-Spring Trail
  • Charity: Race proceeds to benefit the construction of Florida's first bear rehabilitation facility and sanctuary
  • Cost: $40.44
  • Swag: Tech t-shirt & mini beer mug on lanyard
  • Time: 42:11

3 Muscle Movement Foundation Delaware Run for Strength 5K

This race is an in-person event in Delaware. The charity and race is important to one of our club members, Rachel, so a bunch of us got together to run this charity race virtually here in Florida. We ran on Kentucky Derby Day so we had some fun with silly fancy hats and Rachel came up with a creative horse-race-related betting scheme to raise some more money for the cause.

August 2020 5K a Day: Week 1 Virtual Events Recap

I have done a runstreak a few times in July, but for various reasons I didn't think it would work out this year. I decided instead to give it a try in August. It will be more of a walkstreak. To give myself a bit of an extra...

Race calendars have changed in the time of Covid-19. Everyone's had physical races cancelled. But running isn't cancelled. And there's one type of race that's found its time to shine: the virtual race. I wasn't a big fan of virtual races. I missed the race day excitement, the...
